Nate RoskamNorthwest Nazarene University has announced the appointment of Rev. Dr. Nathan Roskam as its new University Chaplain. Roskam will begin his role in March 2026.

A two-time graduate of Northwest Nazarene University, Roskam earned his Bachelor of Arts in Public Communication in 2001 and his Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation in 2009. He later completed a Doctor of Ministry at Portland Seminary. His long-standing history with N鶹ԭ includes service as Campus Ministries Coordinator within the Student Government Association, where he partnered closely with the University Chaplain to support student discipleship, oversee ministry clubs and help shape campus spiritual life.

Roskam brings more than two decades of pastoral leadership within the Church of the Nazarene, most recently serving as Lead Pastor at Lakeview Church of the Nazarene in Nampa. Throughout his ministry, he has been recognized as a relational and vision-driven leader with a deep commitment to holistic discipleship and spiritual formation, particularly among emerging adults. His leadership experience also includes nonprofit executive work, global missions engagement and community advocacy around issues of housing and serving vulnerable populations.

As University Chaplain, Roskam will provide leadership for spiritual life at N鶹ԭ, cultivating environments where worship, discipleship and community life foster deep formation in students.

“Nate understands that spiritual formation is not something we simply add to the student experience. It is central to who we are as a Christ-centered university,” said N鶹ԭ President Mark DeMichael. “At N鶹ԭ, we care deeply about the transformation of the whole person, heart, soul, mind and strength. We want to shape women and men who love Christ first, serve others well and step into the world as His redemptive agents. Nate brings a pastoral heart, theological depth and a genuine relational warmth that will help guide our students into that kind of lifelong calling.”

DeMichael added, “This is an important and meaningful appointment for our University. Nate loves N鶹ԭ, and he understands both our heritage and our future. He carries a clear vision for spiritual leadership that is Christ-centered, invitational and rooted in authentic community. I am grateful for the way his life and ministry reflect the humble, faithful leadership we seek to cultivate in our students as they pursue excellence and live boldly in mission.”

Roskam’s philosophy of Christian higher education reflects a vision in which faith and learning are inseparable, where intellectual growth and spiritual transformation develop together in community. He views teaching and leadership as pastoral acts that invite students into true belonging and Christlikeness.

Roskam and his family will transition to campus leadership in the coming months as he completes his current pastoral responsibilities.

With Roskam’s appointment, Northwest Nazarene University looks ahead with anticipation to a renewed season of spiritual vitality, intentional discipleship and Christ-centered formation for its students.

Northwest Nazarene University has been awarded two grants totaling $11.25 million from Lilly Endowment Inc. to strengthen the preparation, formation and support of future pastors through expanded collaboration, theological education and ministry-based training.

The awards include a nearly $10 million Nazarene Collaboration Grant that brings together Northwest Nazarene Divinity School, Nazarene Theological Seminary and six sister Nazarene universities across the United States, as well as a second $1.25 million grant that will expand and enhance N鶹ԭ’s two-year ministry residency program. This grant seeks to establish the Flourishing Pastor’s Network, along with Grand Canyon University, Palm Beach Atlantic University, Made to Flourish and other institutions. Together, the grants represent a significant investment in collaborative approaches to pastoral education that integrate academic rigor with practical ministry experience in local churches.

“We are humbled and so grateful to receive these two grants from the Lilly Foundation,” said Dr. Brent Peterson, Ph.D., dean of the College of Theology and Christian Ministries at Northwest Nazarene University. “These grants are all about collaboration and recognizing that we are stronger together. We are thrilled with our Nazarene Collaboration Lilly Grant of nearly $10 million, which will unite our Northwest Nazarene Divinity School with Nazarene Theological Seminary and partner with our sister Nazarene universities across the country.”

The Nazarene Collaboration Grant creates a new framework for shared theological education among participating institutions, including MidAmerica Nazarene University, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Olivet Nazarene University, Point Loma Nazarene University, Southern Nazarene University and Trevecca Nazarene University. The partnership is designed to draw upon theological and pastoral leaders across the United States while strengthening the connection between graduate theological education and the life of local congregations.

“We truly believe this work reflects God’s promise in Isaiah 43:19, that He is doing something new among us,” said N鶹ԭ President Mark DeMichael. “Bringing together N鶹ԭ’s Northwest Nazarene Divinity School, Nazarene Theological Seminary and our sister Nazarene universities will allow us to strengthen the preparation of future pastors in new and meaningful ways. These awards reflect the power of partnership, and I am deeply grateful for the leadership and vision that made this possible.”

In addition to the collaborative grant, N鶹ԭ received a $1.25 million Lilly Endowment grant in partnership with Grand Canyon University, Palm Beach Atlantic University, Made to Flourish and other institutions. For N鶹ԭ, this funding will support the growth and enhancement of its two-year ministry residency program, which places graduate theology students in strategic local churches for immersive ministry experience, mentoring and leadership development.

“This residency program provides broad exposure to local church ministry while helping students develop and refine key pastoral skills and sensibilities,” Peterson said. “It is our hope that this program will be utilized within the broader Nazarene graduate theological collaboration and expanded across the United States and beyond. We believe deeply in partnering with local churches and pastors as they participate in the formation of pastors in their early ministry journeys. To God be the glory for the great things He has done! We are excited for the Spirit’s blessings and to see how these resources can be used by God for the further in-breaking of God’s kingdom.”

The Lilly Endowment grants are part of a broader national effort to strengthen theological education and support pathways that prepare pastors for long-term, effective ministry. Through these initiatives, N鶹ԭ and its partners seek to foster sustainable models of pastoral formation that are deeply connected to both academic study and the lived realities of church leadership.

More than 500 community business leaders from throughout the Boise Valley, along with past Emerson Award recipients, gathered to celebrate the couple’s remarkable generosity, leadership and unwavering commitment to serve others.

Eugene Emerson Award winner 2025Duane and Lori’s story is one marked by grit, perseverance and compassion. A graduate of Northwest Nazarene University, Duane first met Lori while teaching school in Idaho. Together, they built an extraordinary legacy as entrepreneurs whose success has always been coupled with a deep desire to give back to their community.

Rooted in the legacy of Volga German immigrant heritage, Duane’s life has been shaped by family and community—values that have inspired both him and Lori to live with intention, serve boldly and invest in others. With the heart of a servant and the mind of a philanthropist, the Stueckles have united community partners, connected organizations and rallied support around causes that expand opportunity and enrich lives.

This includes the creation of an inspirational learning space within the Johnson Sports Center, funding of scholarships, supporting multiple athletic operating budgets and a significant investment in the future of N鶹ԭ Nursing. Their efforts to build bridges between N鶹ԭ and other community organizations have played a significant role in helping N鶹ԭ provide a transformative education to those called to make a difference in the world.”

Established in 1985, the Eugene Emerson Award acknowledges the spirit of cooperation between N鶹ԭ and the surrounding community. It honors individuals and organizations whose partnership has strengthened the bond between the University and the Boise Valley through visionary leadership, service and generosity.

Through their faithful support, Duane and Lori Stueckle have embodied this spirit of unity—leaving an indelible mark on N鶹ԭ’s campus, throughout the Boise Valley and in the lives they continue to touch.
